ESTELA'S 3 ESSAY / YALE

A Generational Affair with Styling and Accessories

Since I remember I have cherished my grandmother´s presence. My most fond memory of her is when we walked together cheerfully down the steep streets of Barcelona. I was more and more stunned when we were nearing the boutiques. I joyfully ran to the jewelry section where I was granted 2 pieces of plastic, colorful, big necklaces, with lots of baubles. I immediately fell in love.

Next, we walked to the kiosks where I was allowed to get one surprise pack of 5 bracelets whose colors glowed in the dark and whose animal shapes remained a mystery until I would open the package, and that was immediately after my grandmother paid for them. My grandmother knew that this was my greatest love in life. I enjoyed dressing up like an adult and accessorizing appropriately

As I continued to grow, my fascination with clothing grew alongside it. I became more conscious of how I looked in different outfits and began experimenting with various styles. Whether it was a casual day out with friends or a special occasion, I found joy in putting together the perfect ensemble that reflected my mood and personality.

When I dress up with clothes that feel comfortable on me, there is a sense that I am taking control of the situation. My colors are my ornamentum and how I'm feeling. Vibrant and bold colors make me feel energetic and confident, while soft palettes make me feel calm and organized. Earthy pastels make me perceive warmth and comfort, on the other hand, darker shades provoke my mysterious side. Each and every color holds a different theme within me, allowing me to exhibit myself through the language of fashion and construction.

Some of my most profound interests connected with clothing is architecture, I feel like architecture is so connected because for me getting dressed is the same as building. What I mean is that architecture isn´t simple, but I view it as the same as combining my clothing. I build my outfits like I would build my buildings, houses, and museums.

In this journey of self-expression, I found a profound connection between personal style and building design. To me, jewelry is the final touch that completes the picture like an arch over a window or a recessed doorway. Just like a floor plan that adds depth to an engineered drawing, the right piece of jewelry elevates my costume and amplifies its impact. Among all the precious metals, gold has a special place in my heart as does el Gran Teatre del Liceu in my city of Barcelona.
